Sydney Dental Aesthetics & Implants is proud to share that our Practice Principal, Dr Dean Licenblat, has been announced as a Director of the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry (ABOI/ID) for 2027.
The announcement marks a new chapter in Dean’s involvement with the organisation. An ABOI/ID Diplomate since 2021, he has also served as an examiner for its oral examination and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID).
For our team at SDAI, this is a milestone worth celebrating. Alongside his work with patients in Martin Place, Dean has devoted a substantial part of his professional life to postgraduate study, teaching and mentoring other dentists.
What is the ABOI/ID?
The American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry is a US-based organisation that assesses dentists seeking its Diplomate credential in implant dentistry.
Its certification process examines knowledge and clinical judgement across areas including diagnosis, treatment planning, implant surgery and the restoration of replacement teeth. The Board also sets requirements for maintaining certification.
The Board of Directors helps guide this certification process and the standards underpinning it. Dean’s announced Director role builds on his existing participation as both a Diplomate and an oral examination examiner.
Why Diplomate status is a significant professional achievement
ABOI/ID Diplomate status is one of the most highly sought-after accolades in implant dentistry, earned through a rigorous process of assessment and examination.
The ABOI/ID describes its Diplomate credential as “the highest professional achievement in oral implantology”. Earning this credential requires a rigorous assessment of a dentist’s knowledge and clinical judgement, with eligibility requirements and examinations determined by the candidate’s pathway.
The written examination evaluates scientific knowledge and clinical principles, while the oral and case examination tests how candidates explain their decisions and apply their knowledge to clinical situations. It is a substantial professional undertaking that calls for preparation, experience, and the ability to justify treatment decisions.
Dean achieved Diplomate status in 2021 and subsequently served as an oral examination examiner. His announced Director role for 2027 is a separate professional appointment, building on that credential and his ongoing contribution to the organisation.
A career connecting patient care and dental education
Dean’s professional interests bring together the practical challenges of implant treatment and the education that supports clinical decision-making.
His qualifications include a dentistry degree, a Bachelor of Science with honours in Microbiology, and a master’s degree from Goethe University in Frankfurt focused on Oral Implantology and Bone Grafting.
At SDAI in Sydney’s CBD, his clinical work includes dental implant assessment and treatment, bone grafting, and zirconia implant options. He also teaches and mentors dentists in Australia and internationally, including through his role as Head Lecturer at the Australasian Implant Academy.
Working across clinical practice and education means engaging with the questions that matter in both settings: how a case should be assessed, which options warrant consideration, how treatment stages fit together and what ongoing care will involve.
His involvement with the ABOI/ID adds another dimension to that work, extending from completing the certification process himself to examining candidates and now being announced for a Director position.
What this means for patients considering dental implants
Professional qualifications and appointments provide useful background when getting to know a dentist. For someone considering treatment, the next step remains a discussion about their own needs.
At SDAI, an implant consultation considers your dental and medical history, oral health, available bone, and the teeth being replaced. It is also an opportunity to ask questions about treatment options, alternatives, risks, costs, and ongoing maintenance.
Dean’s professional milestones sit alongside that individual approach to care. Every treatment recommendation still depends on the findings of your assessment.
We congratulate Dean on his announced 2027 ABOI/ID Director role and look forward to sharing more about this next chapter.
