Up close and personal with Dr Melissa Licenblat

Why did you become a sedationist?

I did a sedation rotation back in university while studying to become a dentist and loved it. I wanted to do something that gave me flexibility and freedom but also a sense of purpose.

What is your favourite part of being a sedationist?

I love helping people get the dental treatment they need which they otherwise couldn’t have done without the sedation. I love the relief in their face afterwards knowing that it’s finally completed, and they got through it. My patients are so grateful, and it really makes my job worth it.

What motivates you?

A sense of purpose. Even if I won the lottery, I would still do what I do because I love it so much. I love ending the day knowing I’ve helped people.

Most memorable achievement and why?

Completing my Sedation Graduate diploma. In the 2 years I was studying sedation, I got married, fell pregnant and had my firstborn child. I did my final exams with a 6-month-old baby boy. I was pretty proud of myself for getting through all that. Go Dr Mel!

What do you like to do outside of work?

I love travelling and day trips. Between managing the surgery, full time sedation and 2 young kids, I don’t have much time for anything else 🙂

Most valuable thing you have learnt and are now applying?

Look after yourself otherwise you won’t be able to look after others.
