Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) for Healing

Platelet-rich Fibrin (PRF) is a technique that uses a small sample of your own blood to create a concentration of platelets and fibrin. In dentistry, it may be used as part of certain surgical procedures at the discretion of the treating clinician. PRF is prepared chairside and placed in the area being treated, and its use is tailored to the individual clinical situation.

Sydney Dental Aesthetics & Implants offers PRF as an option within suitable treatment plans. Your clinician will discuss whether this approach is appropriate for your specific needs.

What is plasma and what are platelets?

Plasma is the liquid portion of whole blood. It is composed largely of water and proteins, and it provides a medium for red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets to circulate through the body. Platelets are tiny blood cells that help your body form clots to stop bleeding and assists with healing functions.

What is platelet-rich fibrin (PRF)?

Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) is produced from your own blood and may be used in dental procedures. Blood is collected in special test tubes and spun in a customised centrifuge to obtain the platelet concentrates, or blood derivatives. This aids in the regeneration of soft tissue and bone, thereby creating a stable environment to perform dental procedures in some cases.

Potential benefits of using PRF:

Use of the patient’s own blood products, which may be considered in situations where a clinician wishes to avoid the use of synthetic or donor-derived materials.

Suitability for chairside preparation, as PRF can be produced during the appointment using a small blood sample taken from the patient.

Integration into certain surgical procedures, such as implant placement or tooth removal, when the treating clinician considers it appropriate for the individual clinical situation.
